Intensive Outpatient Program

Intensive Outpatient Program

The Intensive Outpatient Program at the Center for Success and Independence begins with an initial 12-week commitment. Services include group therapy sessions. Along with the curriculum bellow, our groups allow adolescents an opportunity to practice social skills, receive in vivo feedback, and practice what they are learning. In addition to groups, clients will also receive individual therapy on a weekly basis, scheduled according to client and therapist availability. Our program includes a multifamily component including parent and teen groups, parent groups, and family therapy. All services are provided by licensed therapists.

Therapy in the Intensive Outpatient Program at The Center for Success and Independence will focus on:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy Group & Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy Group

After assessment, adolescents are either placed into our Standard DBT or RO DBT Track for the duration of the 12 weeks. Our Standard DBT groups include a combination of skill learning and process. Skill modules include Core Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Research has shown that DBT skills are effective for reducing high-risk behaviors by helping clients understand how emotions work and introducing new methods of coping with emotional distress that do not result in harm to self or damage relationships. Our RO DBT groups are targeted towards a spectrum of disorders characterized by overcontrol. Radical Openness (RO) is a way of behaving but it is also a state of mind informed by the central premise that emotional well-being involves the confluence of three features: openness, flexibility, and social connectedness. As a state of mind, radically open living involves actively seeking our personal unknown in order to learn from an ever-changing environment. RO also enhances relationships because it models humility and willingness.

While the adolescents attend their respective groups on Monday nights their parents/guardians attend a DBT education group targeted towards being a DBT coach at home for their children as well as using the DBT skills personally.

Adolescent Social Development Group

This teen only group focuses on the client’s support in and outside of the IOP program. The group addresses deficits in an adolescents support group as well as reinforcement for continued use of support that has been established. Other topics to be addressed are resiliency, personal growth, communication skills, and recovery.

Addictive Behaviors Group & Process Group

A combination of DBT, TBRI, and psychodynamic processing concepts are used to address issues around problem behaviors, including chemical dependency, self-injury, high risk behaviors, and aggression. Clients will learn how to better understand their behaviors, intervene with positive behavioral replacements, and enhance self-esteem through resiliency, goal-setting and achievement. In the second half of the night the teens participate in a process groups which allows them to receive feedback and validation from therapists, staff, and their peers.

Multifamily Group – Wednesday

Multifamily group is attended by clients and their family members. Group time includes psychoeducation on DBT Interpersonal Effectiveness skills.

Teen Support Group – Wednesday

This group is led by the clients, with help and guidance provided by therapists and staff members. Clients are expected to lead the group on a specific topic and give support through personal experiences. Teen Support provides an excellent opportunity for clients to identify relevant issues, take ownership of their treatment, and practice giving and receiving support in a more independent fashion.

Parent Education

This group allows for review and practical application of skills learned in multifamily, in a parent only group. This group provides the opportunity for parents to ask specific family questions and gain clarity on how to utilize skills learned with their teen.

Parent Support Group

While the clients are in their own group, Parent Support provides an opportunity for parents with teens in our residential and intensive outpatient programs to share experiences and strategies that work. Half an hour is devoted to DBT education, and the rest of the time is facilitated by parents who have been on this journey before.
